Gershwin Preludes for Solo Clarinet and Chamber Orchestra
The Gershwin Preludes are a window into Gershwin’s compositional style and use of popular jazz forms that appeared in his most famous works. He loved the sound of the clarinet as evidenced by his use of that instrument as a key sound in his orchestrations. As I imagined this suite for small orchestra and I was inspired to feature the clarinet as the solo instrument. Movements I, II and III make a nice short suite. If I perform all five movements, I often switch the position of movements III and IV.
